Go barefoot for your brain! There was a point in time when society as a whole decided it was time to start wearing shoes. Tennis shoes at the gym. Flip flops at the pool. Slippers at the house. Some may even sleep in socks. Lately, people are discovering that taking off their shoes and walking barefoot for a little while feels weirdly amazing.  Before you think that this is about trying to survive in the wilderness or pretending like you are in a Disney fairy tale, it is not. This is simply about giving your brain a break.

Your Brain Is Overstimulated

The majority of people spend their day staring at a computer screen, doomscrolling on their phone, responding to text messages and emails, and answering the phone until their attention span is about the length of a goldfish’s.  Walking barefoot outside every once in a while will force your brain to slow down. Touching grass, hot pavement, or sand will release your stress and pull you back into the real world. In other words, it’s about reconnecting with reality and touching grass every once in a while. Literally.

Your Feet Have Been Trapped All Day

Your feet are constantly trapped in shoes. Tight shoes. Uncomfortable shoes. Sweaty shoes. Work shoes. Those shoes that look trendy and cute but are actually just torture devices.  Walking barefoot is actually good for you, as it activates muscles in your feet that are rarely used. It makes people much more aware of how they walk. Honestly, kicking off those hot, sweaty shoes after a long day just feels extraordinarily amazing.

The Most Affordable Therapist You’ll Ever Find.

Not every viral wellness routine needs to involve an ice bath, a green juice that tastes like lawn clippings, or expensive vitamins that provide results that sound way too good to be true. Stepping outside barefoot for 10 minutes is sometimes just what people need to reset their mind and body while also literally touching grass after a stressful day. Fresh air, sunlight, and nature all help to destress and reconnect with the world. Turns out humans were not designed to sit at a desk indoors from 9 to 5 under fluorescent lighting.

A Quick Reality Check

Before someone gets too excited about this whole idea of walking barefoot, this does not mean walking into a gas station or your local grocery store barefoot. That is not reconnecting with nature. That is a health code violation.  Safe outdoor environments are your best option.

The Bottom Line

Being barefoot outside for 10 minutes won’t solve all your issues. Those texts and emails will still pile up. Laundry will still somehow keep multiplying.  If by any chance you are looking for a quick mental reset? This might just be what you needed after all!
