William “Billy” Livesay, 63, Songwriter, Singer and Musician for The Livesays, Pembroke Pines, FL

How often do you exercise? I try to exercise at least every day, except the days I perform
or the day after, as my performing days are quite strenuous.
Brief description of your workout routine: I do 40 minutes on the treadmill (3 miles) followed by 10 minutes of stationary bike level 11. 2 1/2 miles
Brief description of your eating habits: I drink 16 ounces of water when I first wake up followed by a cup of coffee and a small piece of toast. After my workout, I always eat oatmeal with nuts. For dinner I eat a lot of vegetables, chicken and fish.
Favorite workout: Surfing, but I wouldn’t call that working out
Least favorite way to workout? Hamstrings or glute exercises
How does fitness affect you as a professional? I have to workout to do my job. Singing for 90 minutes in 90 degree heat and constantly moving would leave me extremely winded ( sucking air) and playing three one-hour shows in a club has me always on my feet.
Would you be as good at what you do if you didn’t pursue fitness? Absolutely not.
How do you squeeze fitness in on a crazy busy day? It’s always first thing in the morning – 8 am.
How do you fight the urge to skip workouts? I just don’t go there. If I do, it’s because I have yard work. So it’s a different kind of exercise.
If you travel, what kind of workouts do you do on the road? That’s the rub. Sometimes I don’t because my job is a workout. If there is a gym at the hotel I’ll go, or I’ll do squats and push-ups in the room.
What other obstacles do you face (health-wise) as part of your work? Have you found a way to overcome them? Colds and sore throats are my Achilles heel. I always use my own microphone to keep germs at bay when I can, as well as constant hand-washing.
Does your company offer incentives for exercising or eating right? If so, how do you take part? No
Do you have a family, and if so … how do you juggle work, fitness and family? I don’t juggle, I just make time.
Greatest accomplishment in fitness/athletics: I surf and I have entered local races. I was also a 6th grade physical fitness champion. I played high school football and always played sports like baseball. I was also a high jumper in school.
Weirdest/funniest/craziest thing that you’ve ever experienced while exercising: I was attacked by birds while running. Same spot everyday.
Must-have training equipment: Surfboard 🙂
Favorite training tune: I listen to all kinds of music when I workout. I try to keep it upbeat. Rock/pop – new and old
Favorite healthy food – Broccoli and greens
Favorite not-so-healthy food – Steak and potatoes
Do you think fitness is a factor in being successful in business? Why or why not? Absolutely. Feeling good and looking good go hand in hand. Our world is youth-oriented and a youthful, in-shape-looking person has an advantage right out of the box.
What fit professional inspires you? Bruce Springsteen
Advice for others trying to become more fit: Just do it. Start slow and keep at it. Even when you’re talking yourself out of it. You feel so much better when it’s over. You’ll be glad you did it.
Best piece of business advice you’ve ever received: Keep moving. A body in motion stays in motion. Never give up on your dreams. NO MATTER WHAT.
