Shaun White: the Michael Jordan of snowboarding, the Flying Tomato (though he does not appreciate the term), the legend.
Shaun White is a 27 year-old professional snowboarder and American Olympian. Those “in the know” of snowboarding pinned him as a future star before the age of ten. Public figures from other sports took notice as well, with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk taking Shaun under his wing and helping him turn pro in skateboarding, in addition to his “main sport” of snowboarding.
Though it’s a given that Shaun is a one-of-a-kind athlete, he has also proven to be a one-of-a-kind person. Shaun prides himself in using his public image for the greater good by immersing himself in numerous philanthropic organizations, including the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At the age of one, Shaun had already survived multiple open-heart surgeries due to a congenital heart defect. Understanding his good fortune, Shaun White has certainly done his part in giving back to the community.
After winning a gold medal at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics, watch him try to take the gold again at this year’s Olympic competition.
