Thor Star Chris Hemsworth finds Eating to Gain Weight Exhausting

Thor star Chris Hemsworth has a tough job. Sometimes he’s doctor, sometimes he’s a lawyer and sometimes he’s a superhero. Can you imagine what goes in to all of that? Apparently it requires discipline, weight-lifting and a whole hell of a lot of eating. He did bust his tail training for his upcoming role in Thor though, and I must say … it’s paid off with an amazing display of the 20 pounds of extra muscle he added. As the cover boy for this May’s Men’s Health magazine Chris showed off all of his hard work and talked about his struggles to create a realistic superhero body.

On how exhausting eating to gain weight can be: “I feel as if I’ve been busy, but all I’ve been doing is eating all day. Eating when you’re not hungry and taking in that amount of food is exhausting.”

On lifting weights for the first time: “It wasn’t until Thor that I started lifting weights. It was all pretty new to me”

On eating healthy: “I ask myself, ‘Why am I eating this chicken?’ For protein. ‘Why am I eating this broccoli?’ For vitamins and fiber. ‘Why am I eating this HoHo?”

On his role models, including Anthony Hopkins: “Anthony Hopkins. His whole approach to this business, his work ethic and attitude on set was inspiring, however many films down the track he still has that and he still is excited to be there and treats everyone as equals and everything he does, he is an impressive person.  I love Paul Giamatti, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino and Matt Damon, ya know, I could go on and on.”

On fearlessly searching caves in Australia as a kid: “We built wooden swords and hammered nails into them, and we checked out the cave. My friends and I were convinced we’d meet some ghosts and devils.”

On why he loves being an actor: “I always loved film, but never thought about it as a career choice. I had a different idea of what I wanted to do professionally every week. You know, I was a lawyer one week, a doctor, a sportsman in some way, and then I found out I can pretend to do all those things in acting.”
