For someone who underwent major hip surgery early this year, Lady Gaga looks incredible. In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, she revealed just how extreme the hip damage was, which lead to her difficult decision to pull the plug on her Born This Way Ball tour. According to Gaga, pushing things any further would have kept her out of business for a year or longer.

So how did she manage to recover and get to where she is today? Hard work and determination seem to be her secret. “I had six months to beef up my brain and my body,” Gaga explains. She admits that it’s not always easy. “I love eating pasta and pizza,” she told radio host Elvis Duran, “I’m a New York Italian girl.” Lady Gaga has found a balance that works for her. The superstar’s regimen includes regular exercise and healthy meals.

A workout routine was created for Gaga by her personal trainer Harley Pasternak. She sticks to it without fail. Gaga works out five times a week for at least 25 minutes each time, even while touring. Wondering about those killer abs? Her secret is crunches, lots and lots of crunches. She is also a firm believer in yoga. She has said, “Yoga makes me feel like I can do anything.” Her two favorite styles are Bikram and hot yoga. Although she travels often, she has made it a habit to practice yoga at local studios wherever her travels take her.

On top of fitness, her eating habits are a high priority.. Pasternak has put her on the 5 Factor Diet. The plan advises eating five times a day, two meals and three snacks. The foods should fall under five categories: lean protein, low-glycemic carbs, healthy fats, fiber, and a sugar-free beverage. It allows for one cheat day a week. Some foods Gaga loves to snack on are grain chips with salsa, tofu, turkey slices, hummus, and coconut water.

Lady Gaga is proof that we can do anything. It’s important to follow your dreams even when life gets tough. Hip surgery is painful and so is the recovery, but Gaga is inspiration to us all. Anything is achievable with hard work and a fabulous attitude.
