These videos have taken over the internet, showcasing what the creator deems as a “perfect plate.” More often than not, the lighting is perfect, the portions are tiny, and the food is artfully arranged for aesthetic purposes. The message might not be spoken out loud, but these videos are saying, “This is what healthy looks like.”
Food is a Tool, Not a Trend
When you see enough of these all-too-perfect videos, it’s easy to question your own eating habits. Should you be adding collagen to your food? Are your meals too messy? Should you be snacking less? Although these videos were created to inspire their audience, they often leave viewers asking themselves these questions.
Nutrition isn’t a “one-size-fits-all.” It’s about understanding your own goals, energy, mood, and hunger. The truth is, no 30-second video can fully capture what’s going on in your body.
The Copycat Trap
The amount of food and nutrients you need varies widely from person to person. A Division I athlete is going to need more protein than a typical teenager, and what works for a track athlete might not be enough for a busy parent working a 9-5. “What I Eat in a Day” videos barely scrape the surface of the creator’s lifestyle. You don’t know if this individual just hit an intense workout at the gym, or if they’re ten times more stressed than usual. These are all factors that affect eating habits, happening behind the camera without mention.
If you’re copying these influencer’s meals without any idea how it will satisfy you, your health can seriously decline. You may end up unintentionally under-eating, chasing hunger, or developing serious disorders while eating. These are the serious costs that no social media creator will warn you about.
Follow Your Body
