With temperatures continuing to rise and children spending even more time outdoors enjoying the sun, parents should remain cautious of the effects the intense heat and harsh sun rays can have on the skin.Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr. offers some essential tips to help parents keep their children’s skin safe and protected from the sun.

Summer Skin Care 101

  1. Know your sunscreens. Every parent knows that the best way to protect your child from sun exposure is to lather on the sunscreen. With hundreds of brands out there all advertising that they are the best, how can you be sure the lotion you are applying is really protecting against harmful UVA rays? According to experts, the best sunscreens should always contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These two chemicals don’t irritate or get absorbed into children’s sensitive skin but still act as a powerful shield. Sunscreens should also always be broad spectrum, which means that they block both UVA and UVB rays protecting not only against sunburn, but wrinkles and aging of the skin.
  2. BEENS. When it comes to favorite foods, parents know that beans are not on the tops of many kids’ lists. However, in the case of sun protection, BEENS is the best way to keep your child safe. An acronym for the most sensitive parts of the body, BEENS stands for back of the knees, ears, eye area, neck and scalp. If these body parts are properly covered, sunburn is 50% less likely to happen! (more…)

5 Tips all bikers should know:

  1. Get the right gear – Finding shorts with the right padding and jerseys with the right ventilation is key to having a successful and enjoyable ride.
  2. Pack smart tools– Make sure you bring tools and gear as safety precaution. The LUNA Chix usually carry a spare tube, patch kit, multi tool (Park Tool Rescue Wrench), tire levers and an air pump.
  3. Fuel up – Eating before and after a ride is important, but make sure you pack snacks that will provide fuel for your body and keep you from getting hungry.
  4. Check before you ride – Always check tire pressure and brakes.  If you have an extra minute, go over the handlebars, seat post, frame and wheels for potential cracks and shimmies.
  5. Rest up – Allowing your body time to rest and take in your first few rides of the season is important; try to prioritize at least 8 hours or more of sleep and maybe even a nap to store up energy.

Following are some tips for golfers to help protect themselves from injury:

1. Straight Spine: When sitting, standing, and especially when lifting, using proper technique will prevent fatigue and injury. Ask an expert if you don’t know how to do it, but be sure and assess your technique for these simple daily activities. With your swing, be sure to keep tension on the shaft consistent. Be careful not to let your arms and trunk become too rigid. Remember greater range of motion provides better club head speed. (more…)
