Orlando Bloom,<\/em><\/strong> star of the blockbuster franchises Lord of the Rings<\/em> and Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em>, as well as the upcoming movie The Three Musketeers, <\/em>covers the October issue of Men\u2019s Health<\/em> (on newsstands Sept 13) and opens up about defeating his doubts, or \u201cmind critters,\u201d on his frequent mountain biking trips through the hills of California, and how he will never stop taking risks: \u201cI can\u2019t stop living. It would ruin my creativity, the person I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

How he <\/strong>deals with his moments of doubt\u2026<\/strong> \u201cI call [doubts] my mind critters. Can I defeat myself? I really like going downhill on a mountain bike, and if I just feather the front brake and let it roll, I\u2019m fine. But if I\u2019m not in that zone and I clutch that brake, boom, I\u2019m over the handlebars. Or worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wild reason for staying <\/strong>safe while he mountain bikes\u2026<\/strong> \u201cI pad up. I estimate it\u2019s saved me tens of thousands of dollars in medical fees. I do fly quite close to the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orlando<\/strong> on fear\u2026<\/strong> \u201cFear is not a friend of mine. But it\u2019s something to have a healthy awareness of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking risks is part of his success \u2026<\/strong> \u201cI can\u2019t stop living. It would ruin my creativity, the person I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

S<\/strong>uccess vs. greatness\u2026<\/strong>\u201cTo an untrained eye, yes, success is what people aspire to, and only success. The thing is, success can allow you to try for greatness, can give you an opportunity to take a chance on something. I\u2019m very blessed to have the success that I\u2019ve had, and that\u2019s given me so many opportunities to work on being great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why he likes <\/strong>creating larger-than-life, escapist movies for the masses\u2026 <\/strong>\u201cPeople want to step out of the everyday routine of their lives and enter another world where they can go \u2018wow.\u2019 Believing you\u2019re something that you\u2019re not excites the mind and the imagination. And it\u2019s hopeful. As you clock out the years and life moves on, you look around and ask, \u2018What\u2019s new? What\u2019s exciting?\u2019 We\u2019re born, we\u2019ll grow old, we\u2019re going to die, that\u2019s the only thing we know for sure. How can I spice up my life in the meantime?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fencing is great because<\/strong>\u2026<\/strong>\u201cI love swordplay. It\u2019s a mental and physical challenge. It can also be balletic and dancelike.\u201d<\/p>\n
