{"id":5156,"date":"2011-07-26T08:57:13","date_gmt":"2011-07-26T12:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/?p=5156"},"modified":"2014-10-26T13:00:59","modified_gmt":"2014-10-26T18:00:59","slug":"missed-muscles-legs-need-love-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/missed-muscles-legs-need-love-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Missed Muscles &#8211; Legs Need Love Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5479\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/single-leg-squat.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5479\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5479\" title=\"single-leg-squat\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/single-leg-squat-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: ibexadventure.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When hitting the gym a lot of guys only only focus on bench press, bicep curls, shrugs and crunches.\u00a0 They think the \u201cshow me\u201d muscles they are the only important ones to work.\u00a0 And yes, while it is important to work those muscles, it&#8217;s also important to work the legs.\u00a0 After all, they make up half of your body and contain the largest muscle groups as well.<\/p>\n<p>Many people make excuses as to why they can\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t do leg workouts ranging from bad knees to pure distaste for the workout.\u00a0 They&#8217;re missing out on a great opportunity, as the obvious consequence of not working the legs is the proportional aspect.\u00a0 If someone focuses on upper body exercises six days a week and never trains their lower body, that person may eventually become disproportionate with chicken legs and a stocky upper body.\u00a0 Not a look many people find attractive.<\/p>\n<p>The more serious and less known affect has to do with body chemistry.\u00a0 When you exercise, your body releases testosterone and natural growth hormone.\u00a0 The secretion of these hormones tells the body how much muscle it can physically add to one\u2019s skeleton.\u00a0 When you ignore an entire half of your body, you\u2019re losing out on a lot of this hormone.\u00a0 Some studies have shown that training the legs actually increases muscle mass on arms, shoulders and chest.<\/p>\n<p>If you still don&#8217;t think lower body workouts are important, just ask <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/?p=5143\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Reynolds <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzness.com\/blog\/?p=5392\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Evans <\/a>who play <em>The Green Lantern<\/em> and <em>Captain America <\/em>respectively, in two of this summer\u2019s blockbusters.\u00a0 Both actors incorporate lower body workouts into their routines to get into shape to play these characters. Can you imagine how un-heroic they&#8217;d look if they hadn&#8217;t also trained their lower body? If their physiques are any indication, I\u2019d say working out legs is pretty beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>What would happen if you never worked the upper half of your body?\u00a0 Just think, skipping legs is the equivalent.
