Halitosis, also known as chronic bad breath, is a condition that affects about 30% of the world\u2019s population. This condition is caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and throat, which break down proteins and release sulfur compounds … that in turn create the bad breath smell. Foods that contain sulfur such as garlic or onions can also lead to extremely bad breath.<\/p>\n
But bad breath beware, a study published in the Journal of Food and Science has shown that there is an enzyme in apples that can actually negate the foul smell given off by the sulfur compounds. While this study only used pink lady apples, a variety of other sources have shown that this is true of all varieties of apples. There is even a new trend for women in Korea to keep a small \u201ckissing apple\u201d rather than gum for when they go on dates. So an apple a day may keep the doctor away, but it will keep everyone else around.<\/p>\n
