Since 1960, the number of obese Americans has tripled.\u00a0 <\/span>What?\u00a0 <\/span>Tripled, yes!!\u00a0 <\/span>And six times more Americans are now extremely obese than 50 years ago. Unfortunately, everyone is paying for this obesity epidemic. How much? Here are 10 shocking numbers related to the costs of obesity:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. $190 billion<\/strong> — That’s the amount of\u00a0<\/span>added medical costs every year<\/span><\/a> that are estimated to stem from obesity-related problems. It\u2019s nearly 21% of total U.S. health care costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. 105%<\/strong> — According to a <\/span>study conducted by the Brookings Institution<\/span><\/a>, this is the increased amount that obese Americans pay for prescription drugs compared to individuals who aren’t obese.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. $3.4 billion <\/strong>— Cars are <\/span>burning around 938 million gallons of gasoline per year more<\/span><\/a> than they would if Americans weighed what they did in 1960.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. $164 billion<\/strong> — The <\/span>Society of Actuaries estimates<\/span><\/a> that U.S. employers are losing this amount in productivity each year due to obesity-related issues with employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. $6.4 billion<\/strong> — Every year, this amount is estimated to be lost <\/span>due to employee absenteeism related to obesity<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6. $1 billion<\/strong> — U.S. airlines are consuming <\/span>an extra 350 million gallons of fuel per year<\/span><\/a> due to overweight passengers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

7. $14.3 billion<\/strong> — This is how much childhood obesity costs the U.S. each year,\u00a0<\/span>according to a published study from the Brookings Institution<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 (We at Fitzness, think having the Morning Mile <\/a>in every school would obliterate this number.)

8. $62 billion <\/strong>—\u00a0<\/span>Medicare and Medicaid are spending nearly this amount<\/span><\/a> every year on obesity-related costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

9. $66 billion<\/strong> — <\/span>Columbia University researchers say<\/span><\/a> that if current trends don’t change, annul obesity-related medical costs in the U.S. could increase this amount by 2030. <\/span><\/p>\n

10. $580 billion<\/strong> — The <\/span>Robert Wood Johnson Foundation predicts<\/span><\/a> that annual economic productivity loss due to obesity could hit this staggering amount by 2030 unless the current situation changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another point worth making on the obesity topic is that 1 in 4 young adults cannot join the military because they are too overweight or obese, according to the recent military report Still Too Fat to Fight<\/i>. The report also notes that TRICARE, the military\u2019s health insurance system, is spending more than $1 billion a year on treating weight-related diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, the state of obesity may get worse in this country before things improve.\u00a0 <\/span>Even the fittest states are losing the obesity battle.\u00a0 <\/span>Case in point:\u00a0 <\/span>Colorado.\u00a0 <\/span>The Rocky Mountain state\u2019s adult obesity rate in 1995 was 13.9%. At the time, the worst state was Mississippi, with an obesity rate of 19.4%. Today, Colorado is still the fittest state, but its adult obesity rate stands at 20.7% — higher than the worst<\/em> state less than 20 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n
