Salma Hayek makes waves as More\u2019s <\/a>October covergirl. As a Mexican soap star, she had to overcome a Hollywood that mocked her dream. But Salma kept fighting and had the last laugh with film and TV success. The issue hits newsstands on Tuesday September 25th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

On being \u201cChubby:\u201d<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m not a skinny girl,\u201d she says. \u201cI push it. I\u2019m at the limit of chubbiness at all times, but I\u2019m happy at all times\u201d\u2026\u201cEverybody has a weakness,\u201d she says. \u201cMine is food. If you love food and you love red wine and they put you in France, you\u2019re in a good place and you\u2019re in a bad place at the same time.\u201d She laughs. \u201cYou have to weigh yourself every day, and you have to have an alarm number. When you get to that number, you have to start putting it in reverse\u201d\u2026\u201cI don\u2019t have stamina in exercise\u2026but I have it in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Love keeps her in Shape\/On her baby weight: <\/strong>\u201cI think if I was not in love, I would probably let myself go faster. Love gives me the vanity to continue. I\u2019m not necessarily vain, but when I gained fifty-something pounds in the pregnancy, it did something to me. Since then, at least I make an effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

On \u201cSexting\u201d with her Husband, Fran\u00e7ois-Henri Pinault: <\/strong>She (even) teases a little, mentioning the intimate texts she receives from her husband, Fran\u00e7ois-Henri Pinault, the French CEO of the luxury-brands firm PPR, whose labels include Gucci and Balenciaga. \u201cOf course, I can show you a text that would surprise you,\u201d she murmurs sexily. \u201cI can show you a thousand things. But I\u2019m not going to.\u201d<\/p>\n

On being a strong woman with her husband: <\/strong>\u201cMy God, you have a partner who\u2019s there with you and for you,\u201d she says enthusiastically. \u201cI have a master of decision making helping me out, so of course my life and my career are better. I really enjoy having somebody that I can be weak with. If I\u2019m insecure or afraid, I can talk about it, and he\u2019ll give me strength and courage. I noticed in the past, a lot of guys who like strong women, they really freak out if you\u2019re not strong 24\/7. Or they complain about you being strong, then the moment you\u2019re not strong, they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, no, no, no.\u2019 With us, there\u2019s no power struggle. I don\u2019t mind doing things for him because he does so much for me, and he feels the same way.<\/p>\n

Overcoming Hollywood Mocking Her Dreams: <\/strong>\u201c(I) started from the bottom all over again. I was prepared to be unknown, but I was not prepared to be rejected so many times and to be made fun of because I came from a Mexican soap opera. It was almost like, \u2018How dare you think you can be an actress here?\u2019 Like I was a stupid person for considering that possibility.\u201d She chortles in triumph. \u201cGod, we set them straight! I was smart enough to understand that the consumer power of over 40 million Latinos in this country eventually was going to weigh on [Hollywood] and that these people would want to see themselves reflected.\u201d\u2026.My daughter can always say that: \u2018My mom was this actress from Mexico who was nominated for an Oscar.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

On the best thing that ever happened to her<\/strong>: Not giving birth until age 41 was \u201cthe best thing that ever happened to me,\u201d she says. \u201cI think I\u2019m a better person now, I understand things better now, so I can be a better guide. I\u2019ve done a lot of things with my life that I\u2019m satisfied with. So I don\u2019t have the sensation that a child is limiting me. If I sometimes have to stop everything and just be a mother, I\u2019m like, \u2018Ooh, that\u2019s cool. I love it.\u2019 It\u2019s different for everyone, but in my case, it was better to do it now. Not mention I found the right guy now, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Success not equating to Happiness<\/strong>: In her thirties she suffered from a relentless insecure period. \u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI could have done anything. I could have played anyone,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I never got the chance. And I was very frustrated for a long time. But then I became so happy about other things in my life that it didn\u2019t matter anymore. A good career – it\u2019s a great thing to have. But I see a lot of people with great careers who are not happy people.<\/p>\n

Hayek on thinking all marriages were miserable<\/strong>: \u00a0<\/strong>Hayek sounds giddily, happily married, which thrills her, because she didn\u2019t think she could be. Though she\u2019d had her share of high-profile boyfriends, including the actor Edward Norton, \u201cI didn\u2019t think marriage worked,\u201d she says. \u201cI thought everybody who was married was secretly miserable\u2014that it was something they just put up with for their children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her Happiness Today<\/strong>: Hayek enjoys her work more than ever\u2014\u201cnow that I don\u2019t have to work,\u201d she interjects, laughing and swatting my arm. \u201cIt\u2019s so much more fun! The minute I didn\u2019t have that huge pressure over my shoulders, I started getting more work.\u201d\u2026..I feel more relaxed,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t have to prove something. I don\u2019t have that urge of \u2018Something\u2019s missing, gotta get out there and find it somehow.\u2019\u201d\u2026\u201dI was always dreaming big,\u201d she sums up, \u201cbut my life is better than anything I dreamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jada Pinkett Smith on Hayek\u2019s direction to perform naked in a music video:<\/strong> \u201cI can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve been asked to take my clothes off, but Salma asked me once, and it\u2019s done. It\u2019s not even a question,\u201d says Pinkett Smith. \u201cThat goes to show you how much I trust and adore her. She (Hayek) said, \u2018I need you to be courageous! This is the power they try to steal from us \u2013 you must show it! Her passion is just contagious\u2026Life in general is difficult for women, the patriarchal culture that we live in and also this Hollywood game. Sometimes you can get very disconnected from your deepest sense of self. But she\u2019s someone who can naturally connect to it and understand it. Every time I\u2019m with her, she has something to offer me.\u201d<\/p>\n

On why she takes certain roles, and working with Kevin James, and Adam Sandler: <\/strong>\u201cI take things (roles\/projects) for a lot of reasons that make no sense for anyone else,\u201d\u2026I love them (James\/Sandler) and their wives. I\u2019ll go with them anywhere, I don\u2019t care what the movie is. Because we have fun, they take care of my child, it\u2019s a great family environment.\u201d
