If you’re a parent or a grandparent, you probably already know that the things you teach those little kids of yours will last a lifetime. The thing is – are you teaching them habits that will benefit them for a LONG lifetime? Do you provide dessert every day? Seems harmless, cause they’re so cute and sweet and gee whiz, even thin right now! But a habit of dessert every day today will turn in to a habit of dessert every day in twenty years and that usually doesn’t turn out so good. Not only does it, of course, increase their chances of struggling with their weight … but it also increases their chances of incurring a variety of awful ailments and diseases, even premature death. Today is my Birthday – Here’s my Wish for You
Thursday, May 27th, 2010As I turn another year older, appreciating that I am surrounded by loved ones and still healthier than ever, I’ve decided when I blow out the candles on my low fat ice cream cake today, I will make my wish for you. I will wish that you will make great choices when it comes to the food and drinks you put in your mouth and that you will exercise vigorously on a regular basis. My mission in life is to tack ten years of quality life on to everyone whom I come across, so beyond my legitimate work efforts I’ve decided to use my wishes for you too.
My gifts this year were vast, and to share the most recent … my phone client Bethany sent me a birthday wish revealing that she’s dropped a whole size. I’m elated! Kate is at her lowest weight since college and has started her first pregnancy in the best shape possible. Melissa started her fourth pregnancy about 20 pounds down. Wow! Kristen K has dropped 21 pounds and has taken 10 years off of her face to go with it. Suelen proves that 63 year old women can still be incredibly strong, capable and HOT! Jodi turned jock with me many years ago and continues to impress with distance runs, triathlons and more. Kristen S makes me happy because she knows how to make fitness fun; she works out with her dogs, friends and refuses to do things she doesn’t want to do. She also does it while looking fabulous at all times. Byron is addicted to P90X and Ann has lost so much weight that I officially may need to fly to D.C. to take her shopping for fitted clothes. Low Fat Ice Cream Birthday Cake: My Mission Possible!
Saturday, March 27th, 2010I’m proud to say that my gorgeous and sweet son, Parker, turned five yesterday. He’s a perfect angel and because of this I could not refuse when he insisted on having an ice cream cake that looked like a dog for his birthday. He also insisted that I make it! Now, it’s true that I am the author of a cookbook, but my forte really lies in making healthier versions of the higher fat foods most folks love to eat. Making things look pretty is not one of my better skills. Nonetheless … I adopted this mission on behalf of my baby boy.
The first thing I’d like you to know is that I did survive. The second thing is that the cake kind of did look like a dog. Third and most importantly, I want you to know that I maintained the high standards for that cake that I am accustomed to year-round. I did this by using low-fat frozen yogurt for the ice cream layer and cooking the cake without oil, butter or whole eggs. As I detail in The Everything Flat belly Cookbook, I use Egg Beaters instead of eggs and sugar free syrup in place of oil and butter. I wanted Parker to be happy, but also knew that I could never be happy with myself if I pumped grease and fat into children. So! I’m proud today to say “Mission Accomplished” as his party was a success and hope that if you’re ever given a similar task you’ll step up to the plate in every way you can. (more…)
