I just had a wonderful conversation with an old college buddy of mine, Jon Mendelsohn, and he shared his method for staying slim and trim. He’s always been a sharp guy, but I really liked his plan and I thought I’d share it with you. The “Mendelsohn Method” goes like this: Choose food that spoils. That means, Jon avoids processed foods in boxes, cans or bags which would be as good in nine months as they are now. Easy, right? Foods included in his “spoiler diet” are: raw fruits and veggies, lean meats, lean dairy and fresh whole grains. These choices are all naturally high in nutrition and low in fat.
The Mendelsohn Method doesn’t suggest you should never eat a cracker or open a can of soup, it just encourages you to make the move for “spoilers” most of the time. It clearly works for Mr. Mendelsohn. Thanks for the tip, Jon – I’m so happy we had the chance to catch up!

Pirate Brands, maker of Pirate’s Booty and other healthy baked snacks is always working hard to come up with healthy yet delicious treats to satisfy your craving for salty stuff. Their products go great at barbeques and they’ve kindly sent over some tips for keeping all of the dishes which surround your Pirate’s Booty healthy too. This is actually the way I grill out, so I thought I’d pass them along!
- Go Lean, or go home. Instead of a fatty New York strip steak or pork chop, select lean meats like chicken (sans the skin), top sirloin or pork tenderloin. Grill up burgers using lean ground turkey or bison. Fish is also delish on the barbie! For meatless meals try veggie burgers or Portobello mushrooms.
- Make sure to veg out. Grilling veggies is not only healthy, but the process really brings out the natural flavors and juices. Some great grilled vegetables include corn, zucchini, eggplant and bell peppers. Shish kabobs are always a hit as they’re fun to make and eat with the family! (more…)

Finally! There are legitimatley healthy non-perishable snacks that you can take with you to enjoy just as easily as a bag of chips. Hitting the market with zeal are several brands of freeze-dried fruit snacks with zero, or just a touch of, sugar added. Brothers-All-Natural, Frutzio, and Crispy Green are three brands that I’ve been sampling lately and am completely stoked about; I love them all. They offer a diverse variety of choices including: apple, mango, banana, strawberry, pear, pineapple and more. Comprised of real fruit, they’re low in calorie, contain zero fat and come in convenient high quality bags. (more…)

Just wanted to put you all on notice that mangoes are in season! That means they are both cheap and delicious. I’ve been buying gobs of them each week for one dollar a piece and gobbling them up rapidly, you should too. Mangoes are not only sweet … they’re full of vitamins C and A, so indulge as often as you can. They taste great in veggies salads, smoothies, fruit salads and as a part of your favorite meat kabobs. Below is one of my favorite recipes from my book, The Everything Flat Belly Cookbook. The crunchy vegetables in this salad complement the soft and sweet mango flavor brilliantly. Not only will you find it delicious, you’ll enjoy its colorful appearance.
Grilled Vegetable Salad
Ingredients
¼ cup red bell peppers, sliced (or green)
¼ cup yellow onions, sliced
1/3 cup broccoli florets
½ teaspoon all-purpose seasoning
2 cups romaine lettuce
1 teaspoon feta cheese
1 teaspoon pine nuts
2 tablespoons chopped mango
Salt and pepper to taste (more…)

Most alcohol gets burned off during the cooking process. But if you have some recipes that require a cooking wine or liqueur and don’t want to risk it on children or less-than-healthy guests, give these simple substitutions a try.
Replace one tablespoon of bourbon or sherry with:
- one tablespoon of apple or orange juice
Replace one tablespoon of coffee liqueur or chocolate liqueur with:
- 1/2 teaspoon chocolate extract or
- 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee in 2.5 teaspoons of water (more…)

School days seem long, and kids often need a little snack here and there. Fending off hunger while maintaining focus and energy is a must, so if you provide snacks for your child or an entire class, set your standards high. Just because kids seem to have high metabolisms, doesn’t mean you should settle for a box of Cheez-its or cookies. They deserve more and you can do better! Kids do gain weight, earn high cholesterol levels, and suffer from other health related issues; don’t contribute to that. Put in some thought and seek out foods high on nutrition and low on fat and calories. You can do this!
15 Ideas for healthy school snacks:
- Fresh fruit with yogurt dipping sauce
- Fruit and cheese kabobs
- Vegetable tray with low fat dip
- Celery sticks with peanut butter
- Low-fat pretzels

As your fancy Fitzness trainer, I know most of you expect me to throw boo’s and hisses at each and every form of dessert. This however, is not my reality. I, just like many of you … have a sweet tooth! It’s not overwhelming and I’m certainly not reckless with it, but I definitely like to indulge in a sweet treat on occasion. Because of this, I’m always keeping my eyes, ears and mouth open to find new dessert options that are less sinful than the traditional stuff.
Today Del Monte made me a happy camper. They’ve released a new product called Fruit Chillers Freeze and Eat tubes and they perfectly fulfill my requirements for a tasty treat that won’t add flab to my abs. I have a whole box of the Strawberry Snow Storm flavored tubes in my freezer and they’re delicious! They remind me of the virgin strawberry daiquiris my parents used to allow me as a kid. Yummy!
