I just had a wonderful conversation with an old college buddy of mine, Jon Mendelsohn, and he shared his method for staying slim and trim. He’s always been a sharp guy, but I really liked his plan and I thought I’d share it with you. The “Mendelsohn Method” goes like this: Choose food that spoils. That means, Jon avoids processed foods in boxes, cans or bags which would be as good in nine months as they are now. Easy, right? Foods included in his “spoiler diet” are: raw fruits and veggies, lean meats, lean dairy and fresh whole grains. These choices are all naturally high in nutrition and low in fat.
The Mendelsohn Method doesn’t suggest you should never eat a cracker or open a can of soup, it just encourages you to make the move for “spoilers” most of the time. It clearly works for Mr. Mendelsohn. Thanks for the tip, Jon – I’m so happy we had the chance to catch up!

Eat only one M&M at a time. Mindlessly tossing a handful of chocolate in your mouth is no more satisfying than enjoying one piece at a time. Trust me. Stick with this tactic and you’ll be satisfied with far fewer M&Ms thus consuming far fewer calories.
Destroy your dinner. If you’re truly satisfied after consuming the first half of your dinner or dessert, destroy (more…)
If you’re a parent or a grandparent, you probably already know that the things you teach those little kids of yours will last a lifetime. The thing is – are you teaching them habits that will benefit them for a LONG lifetime? Do you provide dessert every day? Seems harmless, cause they’re so cute and sweet and gee whiz, even thin right now! But a habit of dessert every day today will turn in to a habit of dessert every day in twenty years and that usually doesn’t turn out so good. Not only does it, of course, increase their chances of struggling with their weight … but it also increases their chances of incurring a variety of awful ailments and diseases, even premature death. If you’re trying to lose weight or simply get your health in check, one of the most powerful moments in your journey is to get a clearer picture of what you’re putting in your mouth. It’s shocking how many people choose to blindly consume things they clearly do not understand and I’m hoping this little lesson will make you take a little pause before you take a bite.
I use the hot dog as a great example, because it’s contents, for most, are simply horrifying. Remember that show “Fear Factor”? I do. I remember the horror and nausea which overcame me each time the contestants sucked down plates of brains, testicles and intestines. The grand majority of us proclaimed we couldn’t do such a thing for all of the money in the world. But oddly, most people do. They do it often and they do it for free! Why? Did you know that most hot dogs are encased in the small intestines of sheep? Really? Really! And it’s probably a good time to remind you that the small intestines are the second to last portion of the gastrointestinal track, aka “the poo tube”,which leads to the large intestine and then out. Ew! How many poo tubes have you chewed? God only knows. (more…)

Paula Deen didn’t know what she was in for when agreeing to appear on “The View” this past Tuesday to promote her new book, Paula Deen’s Cookbook for the Lunchbox Set. Clearly appalled by the fat and calorie laden recipes included as suggested meals for children … host Barbara Walters pulled no punches.
“This is a cookbook for kids. Obesity is the No. 1 problem for kids today. Everything you have here is enormously fattening … you tell kids to have cheesecake for breakfast. You tell them to have chocolate cake and meatloaf for lunch. And french fries! Doesn’t it bother you that you’re adding to this?” (more…)
