I just had a wonderful conversation with an old college buddy of mine, Jon Mendelsohn, and he shared his method for staying slim and trim. He’s always been a sharp guy, but I really liked his plan and I thought I’d share it with you. The “Mendelsohn Method” goes like this: Choose food that spoils. That means, Jon avoids processed foods in boxes, cans or bags which would be as good in nine months as they are now. Easy, right? Foods included in his “spoiler diet” are: raw fruits and veggies, lean meats, lean dairy and fresh whole grains. These choices are all naturally high in nutrition and low in fat.
The Mendelsohn Method doesn’t suggest you should never eat a cracker or open a can of soup, it just encourages you to make the move for “spoilers” most of the time. It clearly works for Mr. Mendelsohn. Thanks for the tip, Jon – I’m so happy we had the chance to catch up!

I’d like to impart an important message to those of you on a mission to lose weight. It’s nearly impossible to exercise off reckless eating and drinking. Think about it: You could easily consume 500 calories in less than five minutes. It would take most of you at least one complete hour of vigorous exercise to burn those same 500 calories off. Imagine how calorically expensive a “big night out” could be.
One reckless night out could easily destroy your entire week’s efforts to lose. Example? Three single-liquor cocktails at 150 calories each (450 total), eight buffalo wings pack 1050 calories, 8 nachos from a nacho supreme appetizer alone account for 569 calories and one small piece of chocolate cake equals 600. So this fun night out is going to add 2669 calories on top of the regular breakfast, lunch and snacks you’ve eaten that day. Ouch! (more…)

We’ve all got a bunch of odd things we do that may not make sense … but make us happier with our bodies. Well, Self Magazine has made a list of oddball tactics to get you leaner than you were before. Click here to see their list, and enjoy the few extra ideas I use to stay fit and trim as well below. Have some strange strategies too? Please share in the comment section!
- Eat only one M&M at a time. Mindlessly tossing a handful of chocolate in your mouth is no more satisfying than enjoying one piece at a time. Trust me. Stick with this tactic and you’ll be satisfied with far fewer M&Ms thus consuming far fewer calories.
- Destroy your dinner. If you’re truly satisfied after consuming the first half of your dinner or dessert, destroy (more…)

Pirate Brands, maker of Pirate’s Booty and other healthy baked snacks is always working hard to come up with healthy yet delicious treats to satisfy your craving for salty stuff. Their products go great at barbeques and they’ve kindly sent over some tips for keeping all of the dishes which surround your Pirate’s Booty healthy too. This is actually the way I grill out, so I thought I’d pass them along!
- Go Lean, or go home. Instead of a fatty New York strip steak or pork chop, select lean meats like chicken (sans the skin), top sirloin or pork tenderloin. Grill up burgers using lean ground turkey or bison. Fish is also delish on the barbie! For meatless meals try veggie burgers or Portobello mushrooms.
- Make sure to veg out. Grilling veggies is not only healthy, but the process really brings out the natural flavors and juices. Some great grilled vegetables include corn, zucchini, eggplant and bell peppers. Shish kabobs are always a hit as they’re fun to make and eat with the family! (more…)

CrystalLight.com
Crystal Light has just introduced a new beverage for those of you who love the flavors and low calorie content of Crystal Light drinks, but don’t like the aspartame. Pure Fitness is the first nationally-available, low-calorie fitness beverage mix with no artificial flavors, preservatives or sweeteners and colored with natural ingredients. With only 15 calories per serving, it’s sweetened with evaporated cane juice and TruviaTM, an all-natural, calorie-free sweetener derived from the stevia plant, and it’s colored and flavored with natural ingredients.
Natural is all-good, but I’d also like you to know that this stuff tastes really great too! Kraft Foods sent me a few of the teeny little Pure Fitness “on the go” packets and each flavor was better than the last. So if your the type of chap who needs a little extra motivation to hydrate the way you should, then give Crystal Light’s Pure Fitness with added electrolytes a try. The three available flavors are: Lemon Lime, Strawberry Kiwi or Grape. Yum!

Functional fitness footwear is one of the most popular trends of the day. You’ve seen the ads. Reebok, Skechers, Trim Treads and a few other brands have designed a variety of shoes meant to get you fitter faster. Some commercials and ads for these products even give the impression that simply wearing the shoes while you go about your business is all you need to do! Hopefully you understand that nothing can replace your regular total body workouts, and the most effective way to lose weight is by managing your caloric intake. But these shoes are unique and I’ve been asked at least a million times if they really work. As a result, I sought out a few to try and answer that question.

Reebok EasyTone: First of all, I found these shoes really comfortable and generally pretty – not unusual at all. The shoe does however, have what looks like baby BOSUs on the heel and forefoot of the shoe which they call “balance pods”. It’s clever. When wearing the EasyTones, I had to continually adjust to maintain my balance, so I think they would be great for someone who wants to work on foot, ankle and hip stability. I didn’t however, find them physically challenging other than that. Can I argue with Reebok’s exact research that claims the shoe “works your glutes 28%, hamstrings 11% and calves 11% more than the average shoe”? No … I haven’t done that kind of research.
Bottom Line:Reebok EasyTone shoes would be a good choice for anyone who wants to add a bit of balance training to their workouts. (more…)
