If you’re a parent or a grandparent, you probably already know that the things you teach those little kids of yours will last a lifetime. The thing is – are you teaching them habits that will benefit them for a LONG lifetime? Do you provide dessert every day? Seems harmless, cause they’re so cute and sweet and gee whiz, even thin right now! But a habit of dessert every day today will turn in to a habit of dessert every day in twenty years and that usually doesn’t turn out so good. Not only does it, of course, increase their chances of struggling with their weight … but it also increases their chances of incurring a variety of awful ailments and diseases, even premature death. Summer Skin Care for Kids

With temperatures continuing to rise and children spending even more time outdoors enjoying the sun, parents should remain cautious of the effects the intense heat and harsh sun rays can have on the skin.Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr. offers some essential tips to help parents keep their children’s skin safe and protected from the sun.

Summer Skin Care 101

  1. Know your sunscreens. Every parent knows that the best way to protect your child from sun exposure is to lather on the sunscreen. With hundreds of brands out there all advertising that they are the best, how can you be sure the lotion you are applying is really protecting against harmful UVA rays? According to experts, the best sunscreens should always contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These two chemicals don’t irritate or get absorbed into children’s sensitive skin but still act as a powerful shield. Sunscreens should also always be broad spectrum, which means that they block both UVA and UVB rays protecting not only against sunburn, but wrinkles and aging of the skin.
  2. BEENS. When it comes to favorite foods, parents know that beans are not on the tops of many kids’ lists. However, in the case of sun protection, BEENS is the best way to keep your child safe. An acronym for the most sensitive parts of the body, BEENS stands for back of the knees, ears, eye area, neck and scalp. If these body parts are properly covered, sunburn is 50% less likely to happen! (more…)

Vote! Help Fitz Help Florida School Children Get Fit

Help Florida Kids get fit!

Help Florida Kids get fit!

I’ve recently entered a magnificent competition to attain a $250,000 grant through Pepsi’s Refresh Project. I’m asking for the money to produce 180 fitness video podcasts which would be available to be viewed daily by all Florida school children. The purpose of this project is to impact the children by providing health, fitness, sports and nutrition education on a consistent basis, fighting childhood obesity and promoting a healthy lifestyle. (Vote here!)

In a day which 90% of children go to school with high fat, high sugar lunches and spend their evenings at home plopped in front of a computer, I’m eager to get in to their lives and make an impact! Please vote for Fitter Florida Kids up to 10 times a day throughout the entire month of February. And if you feel strongly that children everywhere could benefit from a consistant fitness message, please ask your friends to vote too!

You may see the entire proposal at the voting site! Thanks to the Pepsi Company for this grand opportunity!

Coca-Cola Execs Run Marathon for Pediatric Cancer while Inspiring Others to Live Positively

Monday, December 7th, 2009

live positively

Coca-Cola VP Bill O'BrienFor years, the Coca Cola corporation has encouraged us all to share a Coke and a smile.  With their leaders working as strong role models, the sweet corporate giant is now coaxing others to share a lot more.  Leading the way in a greater campaign to Live PositivelySenior Vice President, Bill O’Brien, and President of the North American Business Unit, Steve Cahillane, joined a team to run the ING New York Marathon this past November 1st raising money ($2.5 million) for Memorial Sloan-Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center, where more children are treated for cancer than anywhere else on the globe.

In a new America where corporations are vilified on a regular basis, Coca Cola is spearheading the way towards a time when tree huggers and health care officials alike will be placing giants like these on pedestals as symbols of righteousness. In a conversation with Bill O’Brien recently, he told me that his efforts on the roads were not only geared towards the fundraising, but were based on Coke’s bigger effort called “Live Positively” which encourages employees to bring their whole self to work. Bill says “it’s an effort to have employees round out their lives and with permission, they can do things that help make them a more complete person. It might be giving back to the community, doing things to become more healthy or any number of other things. But what it isn’t about is making their entire life about work!” (more…)

Giveaway: Pedz Pedometer for Kids

Monday, September 7th, 2009
MyPedz.com

MyPedz.com

Pedz pedometers are designed to get  kids moving, walking, jumping and dancing more than they’re accustomed to doing.  These cute little frog shaped tools clip easily on the waistband and partner with a fun online program to help kids (and parents) set goals, monitor progress and more. Of  course pedometers are an old idea, but putting them to use on the little ones makes sense in our increasingly overweight and over-sick society.

My four and six year old children are pretty active by nature, but since I gave them their Pedz … they’ve literally been running circles around our house. I challenged them to achieve a day with 10,000 steps and they’ve come pretty close! In fact, they’ve been monitoring their step count closely and have specifically made efforts to up that number. Dance contests, races and walks around the neighborhood have already been instigated due to their ambitious intent to take 10,000 steps.  At the end of each day we log on to MyPedz.com to input their data and play some games. It’s been fun and we’ve loved it! (more…)
