We all make excuses. I’m too tired. I’m too busy. I don’t know how. I can’t. The limits we create in our heads often keep us from realizing our true potential. The good news is that these limits aren’t real. Until we push past the cages we create, we are stuck wondering what we could be. The ultra marathoners and the Olympic athletes of the world would not be where they are today if they let limits control them. Instead, they go above and beyond to reach unthinkable levels.
So today, do something that scares you. A 10-mile run might sound crazy, but start running anyway. You don’t have to be a pro-fighter to sign up for a kickboxing class and you don’t have to be a yogi to start stretching. You just have to start. How do you know you can’t until you try?
Here are a few tips for when the excuses creep up:
- Don’t spend too much time thinking about the possible what-ifs. Life is too short for that!
- Start small. Don’t assume that you will be great at what you’re doing right off the bat. Realize that everything takes practice but with enough time and effort, you will improve.
- Invite a friend. Including someone in your activities is a way to keep you from bailing out.
- Enjoy yourself. If you do something that you are interested in, you will be much less likely to quit even if it scares you.
Amazing things happen when you push yourself. You may come to find that you are a whole lot stronger than you ever imaged and a whole lot braver too. Maybe you will realize that dancing is your passion, but you never knew it because you were too afraid to try. It’s never to late to try something new.
Don’t let fear get in the way of living a healthy, happy life.
