Pirate Brands, maker of Pirate’s Booty and other healthy baked snacks is always working hard to come up with healthy yet delicious treats to satisfy your craving for salty stuff. Their products go great at barbeques and they’ve kindly sent over some tips for keeping all of the dishes which surround your Pirate’s Booty healthy too. This is actually the way I grill out, so I thought I’d pass them along!
- Go Lean, or go home. Instead of a fatty New York strip steak or pork chop, select lean meats like chicken (sans the skin), top sirloin or pork tenderloin. Grill up burgers using lean ground turkey or bison. Fish is also delish on the barbie! For meatless meals try veggie burgers or Portobello mushrooms.
- Make sure to veg out. Grilling veggies is not only healthy, but the process really brings out the natural flavors and juices. Some great grilled vegetables include corn, zucchini, eggplant and bell peppers. Shish kabobs are always a hit as they’re fun to make and eat with the family! Read the rest of this entry »

With temperatures continuing to rise and children spending even more time outdoors enjoying the sun, parents should remain cautious of the effects the intense heat and harsh sun rays can have on the skin.Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr. offers some essential tips to help parents keep their children’s skin safe and protected from the sun.
Summer Skin Care 101
- Know your sunscreens. Every parent knows that the best way to protect your child from sun exposure is to lather on the sunscreen. With hundreds of brands out there all advertising that they are the best, how can you be sure the lotion you are applying is really protecting against harmful UVA rays? According to experts, the best sunscreens should always contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These two chemicals don’t irritate or get absorbed into children’s sensitive skin but still act as a powerful shield. Sunscreens should also always be broad spectrum, which means that they block both UVA and UVB rays protecting not only against sunburn, but wrinkles and aging of the skin.
- BEENS. When it comes to favorite foods, parents know that beans are not on the tops of many kids’ lists. However, in the case of sun protection, BEENS is the best way to keep your child safe. An acronym for the most sensitive parts of the body, BEENS stands for back of the knees, ears, eye area, neck and scalp. If these body parts are properly covered, sunburn is 50% less likely to happen! Read the rest of this entry »

I recently spent some time chatting with Karissa Shannon, who is one of the twins who took over for Holly, Kendra and Bridget on “The Girls Next Door”. Karissa’s still pursuing reality TV but has also landed a role in the Sofia Coppola dramedy Somewhere. Excited by the opportunity to “break out and become famous” Karissa shares the scoop on her romantic affairs with Hef and how she stays trim.
Fitz: Is Somewhere your first movie? Tell me about your role.
Karissa: Yes, it was my first and I want to do a lot more! My sister and I play exotic dancers; I’m Cindy and she’s Bambi, but we didn’t get naked in the film. Our characters are super fun and playful.
Fitz: How did you get the role?
Karissa: They contacted us through Playboy PR. I’m really happy they did it too, cause my sister and I have always wanted to be famous. We started modeling with Playboy and then got to do a lot of TV with the “Girls Next Door” and now we’re trying movies. I’m like Yes! This is what I want to do. I’ll do them with my sister or branch off and do my own thing. But I want to be in a lot more movies.
Fitz: Have you taken acting classes to prepare for all of this?
Karissa: No, I haven’t. But I have a lot of experience from being on TV for a couple of years.
Fitz: How did you meet Hugh Hefner and become his girlfriend? Read the rest of this entry »

Disney World is an awesome place to have an active vacation. Walk miles through a theme park. Jump waves, climb stairs and run instead of tube through the lazy rivers of Typhoon Lagoon. Dance all night at Pleasure Island. If you haven’t done anything fun with the kids this summer yet and you want to plan a trip that won’t make your belly burst, Disney is the way to go!

Core and Curves
I just completed Marisa Tomei’s Core & Curves workout DVD and found it … appropriate for “some”. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t blown away by it and at some points I found it quite dull, but I like fitness fast and fun; this DVD had no chance with me. Having said that, I do believe it would be an appropriate workout for certain types of people! The workout is mild with some moderately challenging moves thrown in on occasion, the jazzy background music is kind of mellow and the instructor’s style is super sleepy. I think I know a few folks who would love it though.
Are you someone who’s interested in a smooth yoga/pilates style training session with zero bouncing and zero noise from an energetic instructor? If so … this video with three short training segments (Body Definition, Best Legs Workout, and Ten Moves in Ten), which can be done together or on their own may be a perfect fit. It’s the sort of workout that will help a beginner gain strength and stability; not the type of workout that will melt away pounds. Oh yeah! The other reason for purchasing this workout DVD is to spend time with Marisa Tomei – she’s in the whole thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Today is the day that millions and millions of faithful Twilight fans sleep in, because like vampires … they were up at crazy hours of the night last night killing people. No, no, no. I mean, they were up watching the midnight premier of the new flick, Eclipse. Hopefully those fans weren’t gobbling up lots of popcorn and Goobers though, because to be like the vampires they so adore … they have to be fit! Ask Ashley Greene, who costars in this adored series with ripped heart-throbs Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kellan Lutz and female actress Kristen Stewart.
In an interview with Women’s Health magazine, Ashley tells of the pressure to be fit enough to do vampirey type things like running, flying and fighting. She says that she tends to bulk up really easily if she lifts weights too often, so while filming the movie in Vancouver, she focused on cardio, squats, and planks during her daily hour-long interval sessions. “I did side planks for my obliques, which are one of my trouble areas,” she says. “And traditional planks tone your back so you don’t have that little bit of fat hanging over your bra. Ugh!” Ashley even inspired squat contests among her female costars (”I’m a competitive little sucker,” she says with a laugh). She did add in a couple of nontraditional weight moves: working with kettlebells and pushing a big box filled with weights across a room. “My butt and legs were so sore!” Read the rest of this entry »

Reebok.com
Reebok ZigTech sneakers are probably the coolest looking runners on the market right now. With their funky zigzag shaped sole and sharp colors, there’s no doubt you’ll be noticed (in a good way) with these kicks on your kickers. As far as looks go, they’re fun and can be completely customized to let you take them as far as you’d like to as a force of fitness fashion. Fun!
ZigTechs are also highly functional. As you’d imagine, since Reebok is one of the “big dogs” in the fitness industry … they don’t mess around when it comes to quality. These shoes provide all the necessary components of superb support, structure, breath-ability and flexibility. After a decade of competing as a full-contact kickboxer (barefoot) and about a million miles jogged as a fitness fanatic, my feet need 1st class care. Running in my bright silver and red ZigTechs has been incredibly comfortable and quite simply, issue-free. Read the rest of this entry »

My lovely friend Sarah Eve, who’s the editor-in-chief over at TotallyHer.com, has written an in-depth feature on a uber-clever iPhone app which will take the question mark off of the heads of those of you with food allergies. This application, created by a registered dietitian basically allows you to point your iPhone at any product in your grocery store and figure out whether you should or shouldn’t take it home. Neat, right? I think so. So head on over to TotallyHer.com and check this article out. If you do have allergies to: soy, whey, gluten, peanuts, cinnamon or something else … this little piece of technology may just provide with you with great big peace of mind.
